Chapter 9

Mary stepped into Dr. Strauss’ office with Pilot on his leash. She smiled at the young receptionist.

“Hi, I’m Mary, Pilot here has an appointment.”

“Hi Pilot.” The woman stepped around the desk and pet the dog. “It’s good to see him again.”

“You’ve seen him before?”

“Uh, yes.” She cleared her throat. “Dr. Strauss will be out in a moment.”

“Okay.” Mary studied her for a moment. She didn’t have time to ask her more questions, as Dr. Strauss stepped out into the waiting room.

“Hi there, Mary.” His expression was grim as he looked at the dog. “So sorry for your loss, Pilot.”

Mary was touched by the way he spoke to the dog with compassion. He bent down to stroke his back.

“I just wanted to have him checked over to make sure he wasn’t hurt. He might have been with Peter when he was killed.”

“Oh no.” He shook his head. “I doubt that.”

“Why?”

“Because he doesn’t have any wounds.” He continued to run his hands all over the dog. “No injuries at all, and he’s not shying back from my touch. If someone had hurt Peter in front of him, he would have done anything to protect him, that’s the kind of loyalty dogs have. No, I don’t think he was there when it happened, were you?” He looked into the dog’s eyes.

“Did Peter bring him in often?” Mary perched on the edge of a chair and watched as Dr. Strauss continued to examine him.

“Just once.” He looked up at her. “And I never had the chance to examine him.”

“Why is that?”

“Peter wanted me to do something that I couldn’t.” He frowned.

“Oh?” Mary’s mind raced, but she couldn’t imagine what it might be.

“He wanted me to remove Pilot’s chip, if he had one.”

“Chip?” Mary narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”

“Most dog owners now put a microchip inside their dog, just under the skin. Any vet can read it. If the dog gets lost, the chip has information on who the owners are and how they can be contacted.”

“Did Pilot have one?”

“Honestly, I never had the chance to check. When I told Peter I wouldn’t remove it, or reprogram it, without some kind of proof that he was the owner of the dog, he bolted out the door.” He sighed as he shook his head. “I suspect he didn’t get Pilot through legal means.”

“You think he stole him?” Her eyes widened.

“Or maybe he purchased him from someone who stole him. I can’t say for sure.”

“Can you check to see if he has a chip now?” Mary reached down and rubbed the scruff of his neck.

“I can, but just to warn you, if I scan the chip it will send an alert to the previous owner. It’s a new system they are trying.” He took Pilot’s leash and led him back to an examination room. “It will only take a second.”

Mary was tempted to tell him not to do it. She didn’t want to give Pilot up. But she knew that if he had a family once, he deserved to be back with them again.
